Women’s basketball falls to Penn State Fayette in consolation game
The University of Maine at Augusta women’s basketball fell just short of victory in the thirty-third and final game of the season, losing 61-56 against Penn State Fayette in the consolation game at the USCAA National Championship Tournament.
UNIONTOWN, Pa. - The University of Maine at Augusta women's basketball fell just short of victory in the thirty-third and final game of the season, losing 61-56 against Penn State Fayette in the consolation game at the USCAA National Championship Tournament.
Senior Darby Toth (North Port, Fla.) came up big in her final game of an outstanding career, scoring a team-high 21 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists. The point guard scored almost of half of her points at the charity stripe, going 10-13 from the line and 5-13 from the field.
The Moose conclude the most successful season in program history with a 23-10 mark.
Freshman Caitlin LaFountain (Topsham, Maine) was the only other player in double-digits for UMA, with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Morgan Card (Ellsworth, Maine) was just shy of a double-double performance with nine points and 11 boards while Jamie Plummer (Richmond, Maine) scored seven points and netted three blocks. Senior Emily Karter (Waterville, Maine) scored four points and six rebounds in her final game with the Moose.
UMA used strong defense to stay competitive in a game where the offense struggled, as head coach Jennifer Laney's team forced 18 turnovers and converted those Penn State miscues into 19 points. The Moose got off to a slow start offensively and struggled from the field for much of the game, though shooting only 25.7% from the floor, well below the season average of 38.6%. The Lady Lions of Penn State Fayette shot 34.5% and were very efficient in three-pointers, going 6-14 from behind the arc.
