UMaine Augusta falls just short to the SMCC Seawolves 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon, despite out-hitting the Seawolves 5-3.
Southern Maine struck first in the top of the first when Thomas Marcotte walked and later scored. The Seawolves added another run in the second on a fielder's choice by Noah Gaghan. In the third, unfortunately a Moose untimely error opened the door for another run, and Marcotte extended the lead with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
UMA chipped away later proving they were not just going to fold. Elias Murray and Gage McGrane each drove in a run for the Moose, and Jacob Plamondon drew two walks as part of UMA's patient approach — the Moose worked seven walks total. Amar Douidi led UMA at the plate with two hits.
On the mound, Cole Payne picked up the win for Southern Maine, tossing six innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts and four walks. Matt Donley took the loss for UMA, going five innings, surrendering four runs (none earned) on no hits while striking out six and walking three.
In the end, the Moose came up short on the scoreboard but proved with a little housework they can be a top contender in the conference.
The Moose next play CMCC on Friday, April 10 at 5pm in Auburn.
