UMA Women's Tennis Makes History In Debut; Come Up Short At Thomas College
September 11, 2024
The UMA women's tennis team took to the courts for their first ever collegiate match, making the teams debut against Thomas college on Wednesday September 11th. Although UMA lost the overall match 1-8, the UMA women's team showed a lot of promise of what's to come for the future of the tennis program.
Thomas college swept the doubles match to take an early 3-0 lead, but then once the singles matches for under way, UMA battled hard in some very close sets. At 1st singles, Hannah Roberts took on Thomas's Keira Gilman and lost the 1st set 4-6, but then regrouped and took a 2-1 lead on the 2nd set, and then 4-3 lead, but couldn't quite find a way to hold the lead and ended up losing the 2nd set 4-6.
Breanna Davis got off to a very competitive 1st set, losing in a tiebreak 6-7, then ran out of gas in the 2nd set losing it 1-6 against Maya Gammon at the 6th singles spot. At 5th singles, Hayden Hoague took on Thomas's Tracy Lopez and dropped the 1st set 3-6, and made a few strategy changes in the 2nd set to tie it at 4-4 before dropping the 2nd set 4-6.
Allie Young was the solo win at 2nd singles for the UMA team. Allie played a very competitive 1st and kept grinding on every point to win the 1st set 6-4 against Thomas's Lily Daigle. Again being the first match for the UMA team, Allie was exhausted after the 1st set, and ended up losing the 2nd set 3-6, but then had time to regroup and make one final push in a 3rd set tiebreak to try to win the match. The tiebreak was back and forth for the first few points at 2-2, but then Allie kept finding a way to keep getting to the ball and getting it back over, and as a result started to pull away to end up winning the tiebreak 10-4 to get the win at 2nd singles!
