Bio
Coach Heath Cowan enters his fifth year of coaching in the Women’s basketball program at UMA. After serving as the Assistant Women's basketball coach in 2020-21. He completed his first year as head Women’s Basketball Coach In 2021-2022. Coach Cowan picked up his 1st colligate victory on November 13th at NHTI with a 69-49 victory over the Lynx.
Cowan's fourth season at the helm of the Moose (2024-25) was the most successful season in program history. The Moose finished the regular season 25-2 (13-1 in conference - 2024-2025 Regular Season Champions) and an overall 27-4 record! The Moose found themselves on their way to Buffalo, NY for the USCAA National Championships for the fourth straight year. Coach Cowan received his second straight and third recognition as the YSCC Coach of the Year. Coach Cowan and his staff where also recognized by the USCAA as National Coaching Staff of the Year.
Cowan's third year (2023-24) proved to be another successful season. Finishing with an overall 21-8 record, 12-2 in conference, The Moose found themselves on their way back to Richmond, Virginia for the USCAA National Championships once again. Coach Cowan received his second recognition as the YSCC Coach of the Year while sharing that spotlight with Alisyn Alley who was named YSCC Player of the Year. Coach Cowan say's "This is just the beginning! We just fell short in the YSCC Championship game, and that tells me there is still work to be done, and I am grateful to be a part of it, put in the effort, and lead the way into what I see as a very successful future."
Cowan's second year (2022-23) at the helm produced even better results finishing with a 23-8 record. The Moose earned their second birth to the USCAA National Championships in Richmond, Virginia in as many years. This year was much like the last where the Moose were able to win their play-in game before dropping their elite eight matchup and then ultimately winning the consolation round to finish 2-1...Coach Cowan saw Alisyn Alley named to the YSCC All-Conference 1st Team and USCAA 2nd Team All-American...
The programs first year (2021-22) under Coach Cowan was an incredible 19-8. The Moose earned a birth at the USCAA National Championships in Richmond, Virginia and won the first and second games in Program History going 2-1...Coach Cowan was also named the YSCC Coach of the Year....he had three players named to the YSCC All-Conference team....and also coach the YSCC Player of Year (Madeline Suhr)
He has 18 years of coaching experience under his belt across a number of Maine high school programs. In his 18 years of coaching high school basketball in Maine he has a record of 188-160 (.540). Coach Cowan can best be remembered for his time at Skowhegan Area High School where he spent 9 seasons coaching the Girls basketball team and finished with a record of 131-50.
Besides his love for basketball Coach Cowan has served as the Head Golf Coach at Madison Area Memorial High School for the past 20 years.
On November 10th, 2021, Coach Cowan was named the 17th Women's Basketball Coach in UMA's 47-year history.
