Chesley joins the 1,000 Point Club
UNITY, ME-- A milestone like this happens very rarely in an athlete’s career, sometimes never. Keith Chesley made this rarity into a reality last night at Unity College by scoring his 1,000th collegiate career point. Chesley, a junior here at UMA, is the first men’s basketball player in seven years to reach this level. Deon Cheers was the last men’s player to score 1,000 points in 2007. Chesley joins a group of 9 other UMA men’s basketball players over the past 44 years to earn this high mark including his father, Gregory Chesley (1994). Other men in the 1,000 point club include Michael Kane (1983), Philip Houdlette (1983), Mark McElveen (1986), Michael Haskell (1987), Dean Graham (1990), Dana Brann (1992), Matthew Belanger (1993), and Deon Cheers (2007).
Chesley had 13 points to score going into the game on Tuesday night against Unity College. He had his friends and family on pins and needles as Unity was able to hold Chesley scoreless in the opening five minutes. A trip to the free throw line helped set the spark for Chesley as he went on to score his 1,000th point in the second half of last night’s conference action. In true Keith Chesley fashion, he marked this milestone powering through the paint, ripping down an offensive board and muscling his way through two players to finish earning him his 13th and 14th points of the game. This momentum carried through to the rest of the team who went on to play some of their best team ball of the year and outscore Unity 95-82.
On behalf of the UMA Athletic department, please help us in congratulating Keith Chesley on this huge accomplishment. The Moose are back in action this weekend playing in the 2014 Ed Hockenbury Classic at Norwich University. All games will be streamed live and can be seen at: http://nsnsports.net/colleges/norwich/
