The University of Maine at Augusta athletics department is pleased to introduce Davy Akoa as the first head coach for the men’s soccer team. The program competed under athletic director Warren Newton in 2011 and will compete in a full varsity schedule in 2012-2013.

“We are excited about the addition of Davy to our department and to our soccer team,” said Newton. “Davy knows the game of soccer, is familiar with the soccer community in Maine, and is excited to get this program off and running.”

Akoa is a graduate of the University of Maine at Machias, where he played soccer for four years.  He collected various team awards along the way, including the coaches’ award and best defender. Prior to enrolling in college, Akoa spent four years serving his country in the United States Navy where he played soccer for his ship’s team. Akoa continues his service with the Army National Guard.

“This is where I have always wanted to be as a coach,” said Akoa. “Many coaches find themselves having to step into another coaches’ shoes  - they are always compared to the previous coach.  To be the coach in an evolving program is an exciting as well as a scary feeling.”

Akoa is a native of Machiasport, Maine where he attended Washington Academy, played soccer all four years, and later coached girls’ soccer. He is eager to set the standard for the Moose soccer team.

“The standard you want to set is one of excellence, professionalism, and respect,” said Akoa. “So I'm very thankful to be blessed with this opportunity and have such an awesome responsibility.”
