AUGUSTA, ME – UMA Cross Country is excited to announce that the former Yarmouth High School track standout Sam Gerken has committed to run for the Moose in the 2017 season.
Gerken ran cross country for the Clippers and finished second in the 800-meter run at the Class B indoor track and field state championships in 2015, running a 2:02.2. Sam is a transfer from Wentworth Institute of Technology where he ran for their indoor track program this past season notching a 2:00.30 at the BU Valentine Invitational. Sam also set school records for Wentworth in the 600 and 500 meter events as well.
When asked how he decided on UMA Gerken said, “The Architecture program is affordable and is very well thought out. I am looking forward to seeing what I can design during the semester, and how far I can push my ideas.”
Head Coach Brendan Gilpatrick is excited that Sam will be joining the Moose next season saying that, “Sam has a ton of experience racing from the 400m on the track to the 5K in cross country and we are excited to have him on the team. I think he has a chance to be very competitive in the conference once he adapts to the 8K distance.”
